Having been a military spouse for 8 years, I understand all of relocation concerns facing today’s military families.
We spent 3 years at Malmstrom AFB in Montana and 3 years at AFCENT (now AFNORTH) NATO base in the Netherlands before coming to Langley in early 2000.
Those experiences gave us the unique perspective of a military family. Having to move to a new area and become quickly immersed can be a challenge. Especially when you aren’t sure where you’d like to call home for the next few years.
The first home we ever purchased was in Coventry. It was a small townhouse in Smithy Glen. Having two pools in the neighborhood and an elementary school right on the edge of the community were big bonuses for a young family.
Rest assured, we’ve settled many different military families over the years. We’ve sadly seen too many move away, but still keep in touch with them online. A few have even been around the world and back!
Now is a great time to purchase a home. We haven’t been able to say that for a few years but things have finally turned around! Rental rates just aren’t as enticing as they used to be. With rates lower than they’ve ever been, buying a home is a wonderful investment once again.
Hampton Roads, Virginia has a long tradition of military families and a lot to offer its residents. There are many communities in York County, Newport News and Hampton that are convenient to Langley AFB. One of the largest communities, Kiln Creek has a Newport News side and a York County side to choose from. If waterfront property is more your style, give Salt Ponds or Piney Point a try. Fort Eustis in upper Newport News is right in the middle of some of the best family housing the area has to offer. Beechwood offers established single family homes and an optional pool membership. It even has a few waterfront homes. Colony Pines is another great community offering single family homes with easy access to the local hospital, shopping and the regional airport.
